In the late 1990s, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned against the potential for an increasing number of prescription drugs, including some that are known as “miracle cures” that have been used by physicians to treat patients. But in 2006, the FDA warned that such drugs were not “a safe and effective treatment for any disease for which the benefits and risks have been established.”1
The warning came as many as a dozen prescription drugs, called “miracle cures” that were not listed on the label. The FDA has issued a public advisory on these drugs, and in June, a group of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, determined that drugs such as Viagra were not a “safe and effective treatment for any disease for which the benefits and risks have been established.”2
However, several of the drugs in the FDA’s latest advisory were found to have been “more toxic or even harmful than expected.” In addition to the above drugs, the FDA warned that Viagra may have been the most toxic of the drugs because it was taken before sexual intercourse, which is when the penis is “usually erect.”
The FDA’s warning about these drugs was based on an analysis of reports from medical professionals that the drug may have been the most dangerous drug in the United States.3
Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. The FDA has not ruled out the possibility that Viagra may have caused the death of a fetus, although the FDA has not ruled out that possibility.4
The FDA found that Viagra and Cialis were both found to be in high-risk categories because of their potential for causing death, although they were both found to have been in high-risk categories.5

The FDA has also warned about a number of drugs that are known to interact with nitrates, such as nitroglycerin and isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil). is a nitrite that is used to treat chest pain.10
The FDA has also issued a public advisory on two drugs that are known to interact with guanylate cyclase stimulators, such as riociguat.11
The FDA warns that these drugs should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, as they have not been shown to be safe in the United States.12
A group of researchers at UC San Francisco, who have been studying the safety and effectiveness of these drugs, conducted a study at a research institute in San Francisco, California, that looked at the use of a new blood pressure medication called sildenafil. They also found that it was used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure, in patients who have hypertension.13
